Nikita Starostin: Germany’s 'sunshine'
Nikita Starostin of Germany has been gaining attention in recent seasons with his captivating performances, vibrant costumes, and steadily improving results. In the 2023-24 season, the 21-year-old ventured onto the Grand Prix stage for the first time, securing a respectable 7th-place finish at the Grand Prix in Espoo, Finland. He went on to place 13th at the 2024 European Championships, but at 2024 Worlds, failed to qualify for the free skate.
Despite the setback, Starostin is channeling his disappointment into determination during the off-season. He is currently focusing on enhancing his technical prowess for 2024-25. Collaborating with his new technical coach, Marina Shirshova, he is experimenting with various quadruple jumps with plans to incorporate them into his routines for the next season.
One afternoon, we had a sit-down interview with Starostin in Dortmund, Germany. We got a glimpse into the personality of the self-proclaimed "sunshine" as he reminisced about his favorite past programs and costumes. He also teased a new stylistic direction for the 2024-25 season.
Starostin shared his deep passion for the sport and unveiled his long-term career aspirations. He emphasized the importance of forging strong bonds with his competitors. He has cultivated this through his experiences living in various countries, feeling at home anywhere and fostering easy connections.
The skater is close to obtaining German citizenship, a step towards representing his adopted country at the Olympics. He talks about his summer plans that are geared towards the goal of securing a spot in the Winter Olympics. Therefore, training up to the 2025 World Championships in Boston is key!

On Sept. 3, 2021, SafeSport issued temporary measures against Sappenfield, including a directive prohibiting her from having any contact with a dozen skaters involved in the investigation and a requirement that another adult must be present to directly supervise her when she was coaching. The allegations against Sappenfield included verbal abuse that led 2016 U.S. national pairs champion Tarah Kayne to cut her wrist with a razor blade.

Check it out by reducing the video speed. He's clearly 3/4 of a rotation pre-rotated on the takeoff and at least 1/4 under-rotated on the landing. He's only doing 3.5 rotations OFF the ice. In essence, he's only doing a triple Axel, not a quad Axel.

What a great interview! I've really switched on to this team over the past 3 seasons... and this interview highlighted the things that, I think, so many of their growing fanbase respond to in their skating: consistently 'bringing something different' every season, original and interesting music choices, and their ability to tell a story through dance and movement. On top of this, great to hear from two young people who clearly think deeply about their art, and have a real respect for each other and what they each bring to the partnership. I can't wait to see what they come up with for next season!

The fact that she is aware her fans can experience stress along with her when she is skating a program reveals that she is a performer at heart. She wants to deliver programs in which her audience can get lost in the joy of skating. I respect the hell out of that attentiveness to the audience. Other skaters would be well-served to develop that.

Amber is a delight and a phenomenal skater. So strong and charismatic. I’ve heard someone say she trains very hard but doesn’t do enough full run throughs? That regardless of mistakes etc you keep going like it’s a competition. I don’t know if this is not common training anymore. This is more for the coach to enforce I assume! Who know if this would help? I’m sure they’ve tried everything though.
